At Mounts Bay Sailing Club, there’s nothing we love more than introducing young skippers to the joy of sailing through a fun, safe and affordable way. To develop the skills of your budding sailor, we offer ‘learn to sail’ school holiday courses, sailing school and out year- round club Learning & Development pathway.

All of our kids’ sailing courses are taught by qualified and experienced instructors, all of whom hold a current first aid certificate and working with children check. With a strong focus on water safety, we provide all life jackets and other safety equipment required to ensure your young skipper has a positive sailing experience.

School holiday kids’ sailing courses

Looking for a fantastic school holiday activity in Perth? Here at Mounts Bay Sailing Club, we’d love to introduce your child to the wonderful world of sailing.

Mounts Bay Sailing Club’s dedicated kids’ courses aim to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to start sailing in Perth. Get primary school aged children out of the house and out on the water this school holidays, leaving them with a fantastic new skill and memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Newcomers start with our beginners’ sailing course in Tackers 1, with the option to progress into Tackers 2 next school holidays or join our regular kids’ ‘learn to sail’ pathway with our weekly Starter Squad.

Development Program Calendar

Kids Learn to Sail – Tackers 1 (Having Fun)

Tackers 1 is our introductory sailing program for kids under 12. This course is designed for kids to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games both on and off the water.
Tackers 1 runs over five days here at Mounts Bay Sailing Club on the Swan River, Perth. Participants don’t need to have any sailing experience and they don’t have to be a member of a club to participate.

Skills learned in this kids’ sailing course.

By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:

  • Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
  • Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
  • Tack (push turn) and Gybe (pull turn)
  • Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
  • Sail with tiller extension
  • Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat

Each child will receive a Tackers 1 certificate in recognition of their new sailing skills.

Cost: $280 per sailor (includes 20 hours of tuition, full personal insurance cover issued by Australian Sailing, a ‘Tackers Pack’, daily fruit for morning tea and a sausage sizzle lunch on the final day)

Kids Learn To Sail – Tackers 2 (Tricks & Techniques)

Tackers 2 aims to build on the fun participants had in Tackers 1, to progress their skills and take the next exciting step in their sailing adventures.

New skills and knowledge are introduced in Tackers 2, enabling successful participants to confidently sail a dinghy in controlled conditions independently. If your child loved their experience in Tackers 1, this is the next step we recommend!

The Tackers 2 sailing program runs over five days in the school holidays right here at Mounts Bay Sailing Club. This course is designed for children who have completed Tackers 1 or have the ability to sail a figure 8 course. However, no club membership is required to progress to Tackers 2.

All the equipment, including life jackets and boats, are provided in this intermediate sailing course for kids.

By the end of the Tackers 2 sailing program, participants will be able to:

  • Safely gybe the boat
  • Correctly use the tiller extension
  • Sailing around a triangle course, including:
    – Upwind – on a close-hauled course tacking through the ‘no go zone’
    – Downwind – with centreboard up
    – Reaching – correct sail position
  • Demonstrate a 360 and 720-degree turn
    Each child will receive a Tackers 2 certificate in recognition of their new sailing skills.

Kids Sailing Courses FAQs

Safety on the water is a top priority at MBSC. The club provides all the safety equipment needed, including life jackets. All our instructors maintain current qualifications and certificates dictated by Australian Sailing and MBSC, including first aid training and working with children checks.

No club membership is needed to participate in a school holiday sailing activity.

All equipment – including life jackets and the boats themselves – are provided by MBSC and included in the course fee.

All safety equipment is provided by the club. You will need to bring:
  • Lunch – fridges are available.
  • Clothes & Shoes (including change) – wear ones you don’t mind getting wet in
  • Towel
  • Drink bottle
  • Hat
No club membership is needed to participate in a school holiday sailing activity.
