Junior Sailing Learning & Development
Experience the wonder and amazement as your child unlocks the puzzles of sailing and masters its challenges. Our junior sailors build confidence and lasting friendships in an ever-changing environment of wind and water, strategy and tactics.
The pride and joy of Mounts Bay Sailing Club is our fantastic learning & development program, designed to help our junior sailors progress their skills and develop at their own pace to one day compete in club racing and class regattas.
Mounts Bay Sailing Club is an accredited Discover Sailing Australia Credited Centre and we offer a wide range of sailing experiences.
We’re proud to offer one of the greatest junior sailing programs in Perth, and we’re dedicated to keeping sailing both affordable and accessible. Kids from all walks of life are welcome at Mounts Bay, and by using our club equipment throughout their training, it’s never been easier for kids to start sailing.
As an exciting and life-affirming sport, learning to sail is a fantastic life experience for any child or teenager. By following the steps of our L&D pathway, your child will develop their abilities at their own pace. Witness your child’s confidence blossom as they go from learning to sail to being in control.
While the learning & development pathway flows from beginner sailing through to high-level competition, there’s no pressure for children to inevitably reach that point. Each young sailor’s goals will be unique and our L&D program helps them achieve the way they want to sail, whether that’s national and international championship sailing or weekend sailing with friends.
Within the junior sailing L&D pathway, we offer a wealth of opportunities and activities, balancing the fun and social side of the sport with practical skills development. These opportunities include our Junior Sailing Camps, Christmas Party, Prize Night, opportunities to be a Junior Captain, and the chance to try different types of boats throughout the training pathway. When it comes to competitive sailing for kids and teens, Mounts Bay Sailing Club offers support and encouragement for our juniors to compete in both internal and external regattas.
The level of in-club mentoring and support we provide is exceptional, with our club legends and long-time members engaged in encouraging and inspiring our young sailors. Many of our instructors have achieved great things in the state, national and international arenas, and provide powerful role models for junior sailors in addition to their expert training.
The focus is on building key skills to help kids evolve into confident sailors, feeling at home in any fun or competitive sailing environment they choose.
Whether your child is a beginner or already has some sailing experience, we can’t wait to welcome them to Mounts Bay Sailing Club. You won’t find a more welcoming and supportive sailing club in Perth – and we’d love for the whole family to get involved with the club, whether that’s on the water or at our family-friendly social events.
The MBSC Junior Development program runs every Sunday morning from 9am to 12pm throughout the season and fortnightly throughout winter.

L & D Pathway
Your sailing journey starts here with a taste on the water with one of our experienced coaches. An introduction to the fundamentals skills of sailing including basics in rigging, safety, wind and weather, and points of sail.
MBSC offers Try Sailing for children with an obligation-free three-week free trial.
Our introductory ‘learn to sail’ course for children aged 7-12. Juniors learn introductory sailing skills in the “Starter Squad” over a 10 week period, though some may take longer, and that’s perfectly fine! There’s no pressure: just a fun and interactive sailing course built around gameplay to build confidence on the water. Fun and friendships are the true focus of these kids’ learn to sail classes.
An “L&D” fee applies which includes complimentary membership, an Australian Sailing pack, use of the club boats, all sailing lessons and a life jacket. Children who enjoy the Starter Squad can graduate to the Race Ready Squad, no further L&D fees apply.
Graduates are accredited with Yachting Australia Discover Sailing 1&2.
We run a ‘Try sailing for free’ offer for the first 3 weeks of Starter Squad. This is an opportunity for your child to come down and see how they like sailing, all under the supervision of our qualified instructors. Numbers are limited and pre-registration is required.
Prefer a more intensive kids’ sailing course? Consider one of our school holiday ‘learn to sail’ programs instead.
Once kids have mastered the basics, the next step in the sailing pathway is our Race Ready Squad. This intermediate class lays the foundations for competition, developing the practical skills required to race whenever they’re ready. We continue to focus on creating a fun environment, while starting to pay more attention to speed and skill at the helm. The O’pen Skiff (Bic) is ideal for the fast fun-packed drills and is the primary class in this program, making this class fresh and exciting for our junior sailors.
Graduates are accredited with Yachting Australia Discover Sailing – Better Sailing.
If your young sailor is itching to take their skills to the next level, our Competition Squad is the place to be. Competition Squad focuses directly on racing skills, equipping kids and teens with the capabilities to hone their technique and supporting skills development. Participants will master their abilities at the helm in both the single-handed O’pen Skiff and double handed Flying Ant. Many sailors go on to sail both boats long-term, and the support of our qualified instructors ensure your child develops the skills to compete at a high level.
At this stage we would encourage participation in local, state, national and international regattas in the O’pen Skiff or Optimist classes and the transition to double-handed sailing in the Flying Ant.
Graduates are accredited with Yachting Australia Discover Sailing – Start Racing and Better Racing.
MBSC is the premier club for Flying Ant sailing in WA.
We offer a specific program to transition our juniors from single-handed sailing boats to double. This fundamental progression opens the door a large range of sailing possibilities for your child’s future.
The Flying Ant is a 3.2m long double-handed sailing skiff with a sloop rig comprising main, jib and spinnaker, and the crew on trapeze. Its high-performance hull shape makes it a great intermediate dinghy for young sailors wanting to sail with someone else and experience the thrills of performance skiff sailing.
With national representation the Flying Ant provides great opportunities both on the water and off, building connections and camaraderie that will last a lifetime.

Mounts Bay Sailing Coaches
Our carefully selected coaches are a testament to the success of the L&D pathways we’ve established at Mounts Bay. MBSC’s coaches are extremely skilled and qualified instructors and sailors in their own right, with numerous State, National and World Championships to their names. But what’s even more significant is that many of our coaching staff are former junior members themselves.
Our coaches are invested in supporting each junior member’s journey and remain involved in the club season after season, witnessing their growth into confident and independent sailors.
MBSC coaches have completed Australian Sailing Dinghy Instructor’s courses, first aid courses, and all have Working with Children Check cards. Our coaches are passionate about sailing and many have had great successes in their own sailing careers. They provide an invaluable tool passing on knowledge and experience to the next generation of sailors.
Our Sailing Development Coordinator Conor Smith began sailing at the age of 7 and has had a myriad of experience sailing Mudlarks, Herons, Jay-Dees, Cherubs, 29ers, Sharpies and Keelboats. She has participated successfully at state and national sailing events throughout her sailing career. As a mum of three young girls she is committed to build on the foundations for one of the best junior development programs in Perth.
When Are The Mounts Bay Junior Sailing & Training Sessions Held?
Our junior L&D program is now run after school weekly, as well as Sunday mornings at 9am before weekly racing. These programs are available throughout both our summer and winter seasons.
Parents are welcome to spectate or even participate in various volunteer support activities, as well as enjoying the social scene at our regular club events.
We understand that you (and your child) want to try sailing before you commit – come down on a Sunday and find out what it’s all about! Our fantastic volunteers and instructors would be happy to answer any of your questions.
